I still like the layout of your page, but I still thing you should find a way to keep the text away from the borders to make it look cleaner.

Excellent summary. This article can be hard to get through, but once you do, there's a great wealth of knowledge in it.

Kim - you dont have to submit your pages, but it helps. Simply visiting the major search engines (detailed on SearchEngineWatch.com) and going to their submission form pages, will allow you to submit your information. Also, having other websites link to your site, is a wonderful way to "exchange links" and you have a better chance of search engines finding your website this way. Over time, the SE will eventually find your website, but if you want to speed up the process it helps to submit specific pages.

Kim

When you hit the Enter or Return button in Dreamweaver, it automatically wraps a P (paragraph) tag around the content. This by default, adds the extra line of space you are describing.

If you want a single-space, hit Shift-Return or Shift-Enter to add a single line break (BR) in your code!

Hi Kim, I had the same problem that you have with CS3, which I have as well. Looking for the layers option was a pain - but I think I have an answer for you. In CS3 you have to switch your viewing mode to layout mode by selecting View > Table Mode > Layout Mode. Once in layout mode you create the layers by using the Draw Layout Table and the Draw Layout Cells commands. These commands are on the far right hand side of your layout bar. I hope I did not confuse you more.

I feel your pain,
Mike

Hi Kimberly -- I can see that you are trying to make the navigation very easy to find. My concern is that by repeating it top, left and bottom that it creates a bit of a boxed in feel.
When I recently had trouble making a soft pastel design accessible I checked out: http://juicystudio.com/services/colourcontrast.php#contrast and was able to up the contrast between text and background enough keep the gentle look I wanted, but make it more readable.
I like that the arc in the design is mirrored in the photo insert.
Have you considered moving the flash banner up to the top along side the logo and having your main navigation across the whole page width beneath? You could then have a narrow column where left nav is now for prominent contact info and news items, small photos and same big right area for content. Even these simple sites are such a Rubik's cube to design...it makes my head spin!

I think it's somewhat "generic", but it's something that a government client would really eat up, so no worries. I was going to suggest something different as far as the top photo, so I'd like to see the Flash that you come up with.

Hi Kimberly, I too got a lot out of this article and am trying to apply it to my regular work and my final project. I've always had a bookmark folder of sites that I like, and a real folder of samples and discarded ideas for future inspiration...not sure I want to call it a "morgue file"...like to think of a happier name!
